US Team Earns First Place at the Romanian Master of Mathematics

Washington, DC - The US team earned first place at the Romanian Master of Mathematics (RMM), organized in person for the first time since 2020, from February 27 - March 4, 2023. The RMM is a challenging international high school mathematics competition that allows students to exchange mathematical ideas and engage in cross-cultural communication with other students worldwide.

The US team, organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), has participated in the RMM since 2012. In 2020, the US team placed 3rd and 4th in 2021.

A total of 15 teams from 13 countries competed at the 14th Romanian Master of Mathematics. Over the course of two days, students worked through six problems; the team score is based on the combined highest three individual scores.

USA Team Members: 4 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal. Each US team member received an individual award:

Huaye Lin - GOLD medal (individual rank #4)
Maximus Lu - GOLD medal (individual rank #5)
Alexander Wang - GOLD medal (individual rank #2)
Kevin Wu - BRONZE medal (individual rank #25)
Alex Zhao - GOLD medal (individual rank #7)

Po-Shen Loh of Carnegie Mellon University was the US Team Leader, and Carl Schildkraut was the US Team Deputy Leader.

Students on the US RMM team participate in the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), MAA’s training initiative that focuses on long-term development for students with exceptional mathematical abilities. MOP draws high-performing high school students from the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10/12 and subsequent invitational competitions. Students are invited to participate in a series of AMC examinations that culminate with the International Mathematical Olympiad.
