U.S. Team Takes First Place at European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad

Washington, DC - The U.S. team took first place at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) held April 7-13, 2019 in Kyiv, Ukraine against teams from 50 countries. In addition to first place team honors, each member of the four-person team was awarded a medal for their individual performance on the challenging mathematics exam.

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition for female high school students. This year's competition had 196 student participants. The U.S. team is organized by the Mathematical Association of America and has consistently placed in the top four teams with another first-place team finish in 2017.

The 2019 EGMO U.S. team members are Emma Qin (EGMO individual gold medal), Ishika Shah (EGMO individual gold medal), Janabel Xia (EGMO individual silver medal), and Catherine Wu (EGMO individual gold medal). Meghal Gupta served as team leader and Rachel Zhang as deputy leader.

The exam is made up of six proof-style problems given over two days. The U.S. team score was 125 out of a possible 168 points. Qin was the second highest scoring student competitor receiving 37 points out of a possible 42.
