Washington, DC - The U.S. team earned third place at the Romanian Master of Mathematics (RMM) held in Bucharest, Romania from February 26 - March 2, 2020. The RMM is a challenging international high school mathematics competition that allows students to exchange mathematical ideas and engage in cross-cultural communication with other students from around the world.
The U.S. team, organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), earned first place at the competition in 2018 and 2019.
A total of 20 teams from around the world competed at the 12th Romanian Master of Mathematics. Over the course of two days, students work through six problems; the team score is based on the combined highest three individual scores.

Po-Shen Loh of Carnegie Mellon University served as the U.S. Team Leader, and Ankan Bhattacharya served as the U.S. Team Deputy Leader.
Students on the U.S. RMM team participate in the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), MAA’s training initiative that focuses on long-term development for students with exceptional mathematical abilities. MOP draws high-performing high school students from the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10/12 and subsequent invitational competitions. Students are invited to participate in a series of AMC examinations that culminate with the International Mathematical Olympiad.
